Family life for Cole was one of pure joy, something that he could really get used to. Being a father was the best thing that had ever happened to him, and Cole and his wife Amelia were more than happy to have more children. But being a at home dad wasn't something that was particularly accepted in that time, and they were struggling to make ends meet. So Cole decided to try to find another job - he did so by going to the Boston Police Department. He hadn't had police training but he had Army training, so they decided to give him a shot. Cole was given a job as a police officer, and was put through all the hazing that being a new officer came with, but he was used to it. They hadn't called him the prank master in the Army for nothing.
Cole started to move up, gain the respect of his peers. But someone wasn't happy to have Cole on the force - the Commissioner. He viewed Cole as moving too fast, and thinking too quickly on his feet, and when Cole promoted to detective, he was placed with a man named Gordon Worthington who was the complete opposite of who he was. The Commissioner was determined to see both men fail, but instead Cole and Gordon worked wonderfully together, and have been the most decorated and succesful detectives in the Boston Police Department for the last fifteen years.
Through all of Cole's career highs, there were professional lows. Two of his children died in what was called 'Army training exercises', and his wife Amelia killed herself shortly after due to the heartbreak of losing their children. With one child alive and still in the Army, Cole has focused on keeping his life afloat, and trying to make sure his heart is still beating when he's not focused on Boston and the life of being a public servant.
Unfortunately, it turned out to be a bad call. Two of his children, Julia and Peter, ended up dying during an Army training exercise - or at least this was the reason the Government gave them. Truth was, Cole suspected it was something else. His youngest son, Keith, remained in the Army and is now serving as a Private E-2, but the damage had already been done to the Emerson's family life.
A year after Julia and Peter were killed, Cole's wife and the children's mother Amelia ended up committing suicide. It took Cole a while to move on, and he had swore he would never re-marry. This ended up being a lie. In 2012, he was married again, but the marriage only lasted six months, Cole wasn't able to move on past his deceased wife, and the new wife was too much of a liar for Cole to be happy.
Since then, Cole has remained single, keeping in touch with his son Keith, and working on their father/son relationship. He's only recently started to get back into the dating game again, but with work again taking up most of his time, dating isn't going so well.

Phillip J. "Phil" Coulson is the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. Prior to his appointment, he served as one of the organization's best operatives. He acted as former Director Nick Fury's right-hand man for many important missions. He was put in charge of surveillance and served as the primary operative in Fury's Avengers Initiative. Agent Coulson also ran ground interference and tactical operations in Puente Antiguo, New Mexico as part of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s investigation surrounding the incident with Thor and the Destroyer. Coulson was also the primary S.H.I.E.L.D. operative in the investigation into Stark Industries: Sector 16 and the incident on the Howard Stark Memorial Freeway.
During the Attack on the Helicarrier, Agent Coulson was killed by Loki. His death gave the Avengers the push they needed to band together and stop the Chitauri invasion. On the orders of Director Fury, Coulson was brought to the Guest House, a secret facility where he was brought back to life using treatments developed by Project T.A.H.I.T.I., a project which he had formerly presided over. To preserve his sanity after he was healed, all memory of these events were removed from his mind.
Coulson returned to S.H.I.E.L.D. to lead a new team to investigate the cases S.H.I.E.L.D. had not yet classified. While on this team, Coulson discovered the truth about the events after his death. During the HYDRA Uprising, despite the dissolution of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the betrayal of a member of his team, he led his team against the forces of HYDRA, attempting to stop his former colleague John Garrett, winning the final battle in which Garrett was ultimately defeated. After the battle, Nick Fury appointed him the new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., ordering him to rebuild the organization from scratch.
